Space, rocketry, beautiful scenery and great food in Alamogordo, NM

The New Mexico Museum of Space History in Alamogordo is a must see if in the area. We have been to several of the larger, NASA run sites. They are great, but this one is more intimate and directly references the nearby White Sands Missle Range. There is so much to see and do in Alamogordo, we will definitely be coming back!

Wide open space on the way to Alamogordo

There is a lot of “empty” space in New Mexico. We travelled with a large lava flow to our right and beautiful snow capped mountains on our left. It was breathtaking. There was only one small town on our route and that suited us just fine!

A little weather blew through on our trip, but it did not deter us any!

We got to drive by Three Rivers Petroglyph site, and wistfully looked at it. That is a location we will definitely be returning to. Check out our adventure at that site here.

Space Museum!

Technically named the New Mexico Museum of Space History, it is a great museum chronicling some of our early efforts to go to space. They also document portions of the “space race” and have interactive displays as well.

Life imitates art imitates life

There is a section of the museum dedicated to how space exploration influenced science fiction and how science fiction influence the US Space Progam.

Think about it, some of the kids that grew up watching rockets and spacecraft on tv grew up to be scientists and engineers. A communicator that fit in your hand and could talk over great distances? Doors that open by themselves? Manned missions to other planets? How could a generation resist trying to make those real?

On the flip side, some of the greatest science fiction movies have taken plots, equipment and concepts directly from press releases! I find it amazing how much influence the Space Program has had on our daily lives.

Outside there are several static displays. These range from rockets, to lunar capsules (that you can climb in!) to parabolic dishes set up across the yard from one another with a small zone you can whisper into and be heard in the other dish.

To bodly go where lots have gone before – Burgers!

I am often led by my stomach and love trying new and local foods. However; we had been dying for some good burgers. Luckily, we got to do both at Rockin BZ Burgers! We did get a few strange looks, but when dining in a local type of establishment that is not exactly mainstream – well, let’s just say you get used to it.

There was a round table in the middle of the entryway with all of the burger sizes, bun options, topping options and drinks. We were met by an extremely nice waitress (who was actually running the entire restaurant) who explained what we needed to do to get some awesome burgers!

We each got different things on the burgers, as well as some different appetizers to try!

It was not a Michelin Star restaurant, but it was really tasty, clean and friendly. We would definitely recommend that you try it if in Alamogordo!

Closing one adventure out, getting ready for another!

We had a great time in Alamogordo, and will be back to see some things we missed the first time around.

There is no adventure too small or too big! We want to see it all and do it all. There is nothing like immersing yourself in local culture to truly learn what America is about. If you are new to us, please check out our Archives and read up on some of the things we have done that interests you! We travel all over and try to do a variety of things!
