Add a sports hobby on the road!

Sports can be a great way to relax, build character, meet people and enjoy the outdoors. We already hike everywhere we go (check out our archives – we got some GREAT pictures). We really wanted to add something else, just in case we ended up somewhere and needed some physical exercise and the hiking opportunities were not great.

If you have been keeping up with us you already know we love trying the local “flavor” and by that, I mean we eat, locally, everywhere we go. We need to burn that off! I needed something Ash and I could do together, and our daughter could enjoy. We needed something that would follow us from place to place and we did not need a team, league, etc and be anchored somewhere and finally we needed to be outside.

We tried a few sports, and came up with disc golf! It’s great exercise, often in wooded areas with awesome walks and it is absolutely everywhere. The state of Arkansas (where we are currently anchored for our daughter’s eighth grade year until Road Schooling!) has over twenty courses scattered across the state.

Simple Google Search, probably some copywright laws broken here…

Where did we go to try this new sport first?

Well, there are disc golf courses and then there are disc golf resorts. We wanted something free and something we could make TONS of mistakes at without judgement. We picked a local city run course. It was great! Each hole is about 255 meters apart and while there are trees, it’s a straight shot from the tee to the basket.

This was about 2/3 down the fairway

We did manage to find the trees, and a ditch and a yard across the road from the course… We learned SO much from trial and error. It was 92 degrees outside and we did not bring much liquid or snacks (big mistake) and we were throwing all 3 drivers/fairway discs each time, so essentially playing the course 3 times at once. It was a great way to learn but exhausting.

I was eventually able to get the disc (don’t you dare say “frisbee”) 2/3 of the way down the fairway in a relatively straight line but have a long way to go straigtening the throw and getting distance. Ash was able to get hers pretty straight, but distance is a challenge she is working to overcome. Neither of us were in danger of setting any (good) records!

I managed to get one of mine stuck in a tree!

What to do after a day in the sun?

We had a great time and really enjoyed learning about this new sport. We will try it out some more and get better with practice! The best thing is there are disc golf courses everywhere!

We were tired, thirsty, hungry and wore out by the time we finished up. I have to admit, we cheated. Not at the sport, we don’t know enough to even know how to cheat – at our local flavor vibe. We hit up Chili’s, got some cheese fries, water and beer! A great ending to a fun day.

Cold and refreshing after a day in the sun!
