Wichita Falls TX is extremely hot in the summer under normal conditions. This summer is not normal! It also has a lot to offer. We took advantage of some of it and have marked it as a return location!
Too Hot where we stayed!
We stayed in the KOA just north of Wichita Falls. We had a great spot, patio resource, fire ring, large paved and level. It was 110 degrees most days we were there. A little too hot for a fire, too hot to sit outside until close to 10 PM. (Remember the awning incident of 2022!)
This KOA has a pet walk area, and we took advantage of that for the dogs to have some of the leash time. They loved it. We just had to time it right so they did not overheat.
There is a beautiful salt water pool on site. We took advantage of that! Not sure what the deal was, but everyone else waited until late in the evening to get in the pool. We had it completely to ourselves in the early afternoon!
However, the lack of shade and while it was close to Wichita Falls, we found a little city park right in the middle of town that offers weekly camping for much cheaper and a lot of shade!
Is there hiking? It’s a city so…
Not a lot of hikes in the area. Of course you know we had to get outside anyway and check things out. There is a a system of trails we want to try out that link all of the surrounding parks together. More can be discovered here. We didn’t get to it (remember, really hot). We did explore the central park area that has the “Falls” a manmade structure that is visible from the highway and a really brown river.
The park has a Disc Golf course (we wanted to try it out, to dang hot), some paved trail areas and a sweet suspended bridge leading to the camping area I was talking about. It is extremely close to the expressway, but has full hook-ups. We’ll probably try that out next time.
So what is there to do and why would we want to go back?
Hear me out. The previously mentioned trails would be awesome without the heat. There are also a ton of bike trails that we do not need $15000 bikes to take advantage of, the disc golf course and Sierra, well Sierra needs a city everyone once in a while. There’s a mall (we took her there and got a smile for the first time in days), a huge water park and normal city amenities.
What to eat when it’s hot!
Come on, you know we had to get some good eats. I cheated. When I drove for a living, one of our terminals is really close to where we camped. So I knew a few things.
The family had never had Braum’s before. For those that don’t know, Braum’s a burger joint (great burgers and fries); it is also a premium ice cream parlor! (They also have some frozen yogurt if you’re crazy enought o pass up on the ice cream!)
We had burgers and fries, then hurt ourselves with ice cream. Hot fudge sundae for Ash, Sierra just got ice cream – and well I HAD to have the banana split. I mean, come on, it’s health food. It has fruit.
Then I dragged them over to the Feed Lot Restaurant in Burkburnett, TX. We had a great time. It was fun, good food and has had a little bit of a remodel since I was there last. It’s a steakhouse that serves a little bit of everything. Highly recommend the Texas Toothpicks as an app.
Had to ask what a Red Dirt Beer was. If you know and have had some, let me know what you thought in the comments without revealing what it is for those not in the know. Don’t judge me for not knowing! I have a pretty good depth of knowledge about bourbon, whisky, scotch and rum, I don’t drink a lot of beer. Germany ruined that for me!
Coming back (maybe when it isn’t as hot)
We’ll be coming back – want to try out that water park! Well, Sierra does… We always find a way to have fun and this was not exception. If you’re new to us – we’re a nomadic family and always are in search of fun and peace. Check out our archives!
